I’ve been cycling in Rome for eight years. My gravel bike was a loyal companion, but it came with limitations: it stayed in the garage, I had to go down to get it every time, and on trains I could only board in the dedicated bike carriage. It worked, but it was often complicated. And so I ended up using my car more than I wanted to, stuck in traffic and wasting time searching for a parking spot — which is becoming almost impossible to find.
